Dr. Starkov’s expertise includes more than 20 years of research focused on various mitochondrial functions with an emphasis on energy production, Ca2+-induced damage, reactive oxygen species generation and mitochondria antioxidant systems. He received his Ph.D. in biochemistry from Moscow State University, Russia; he was trained in mitochondrial research in the leading world laboratories including that of Prof. V.P. Skulachev (Moscow), Prof. Britton Chance (University of Pennsylvania, USA), Prof. Gary Fiskum (University of Maryland, USA), and Prof. Flint Beal (Weill College Cornell University, USA). Currently, the major focus of Dr. Starkov’s research is on the regulation and mechanistic aspects of mitochondria – glycolysis interaction in the context of neurodegenerative diseases.
