Paul Schumacker, Ph.D.

Laboratory director
Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University

The Schumacker lab studies the role of mitochondrial signaling in diverse biological processes including development, cancer, cardiopulmonary disease and neurodegeneration.  Mitochondrial signals of particular interest include reactive oxygen species and metabolic signals arising from intermediary metabolism and the TCA cycle.  Studies in neurodegeneration have focused on bioenergetics demands in dopaminergic neurons, the role of mitochondrial Ca2+ in mitochondrial oxidant stress, and the effects of aging on mitochondrial function and cell survival in neurons.
